You've always wanted a degree in cosmetology and as a result, you've headed off to a beauty school in your area. The program goes well and eventually, you graduate. Now you are finally qualified to run your own salon and start working for the public. While beauty school may have given you the skills that you need to survive in the cosmetology world, there are a few things that you will eventually have to learn on your own because the school did not teach them to you. You Need To Be Ready to Expand Your Horizons

Trying new things is always frightening, especially if you were only taught certain techniques. However, it is important that you learn quickly to perform tasks that you have never done before, and don't refuse a client just because his or her request is too difficult. If you really want to build your reputation and establish a good rapport with your clients, then you need to expand your horizons whenever possible--seize the day, and try things that are challenging. This will help you hone your skills and ultimately help you become a better hairdresser, beautician, or cosmetologist.

You Might Have to Do a Few Unpaid Gigs

Not everything that you do as a hairdresser or cosmetologist will be done for payment, and this is just a fact that you will have to accept as you move up through the ranks. In order to really start off on the right foot, it is a good idea to volunteer to do free work for charities or even for a few customers during special occasions or just because you need to get the experience. If you can do that, then people will hear more about you, and they will be more likely solicit your services in the future.

You May Lose a Few Clients

From time to time, everyone loses clients. You might develop a good relationship with a client who keeps coming back to you for all of their haircuts, nail treatments, or other cosmetic procedures. Then one day, he or she might stop coming to you for whatever reason. Perhaps their money ran out or they moved away, or, sadly, they may have found someone who offers cheaper prices than you do. It will probably be heartbreaking the first time you lose a client, but you should know that this doesn't make you a bad person--it's just a fact of life that is outside of your control.

Beauty school prepares you for a lot of things in the real world, but it doesn't always prepare you for these three things. However, the quicker you realize these things and come to accept them, the quicker you will be able to grow and change in your professional career so that you can become the successful person you have always wanted to be.
